January 21, 2011 Local & Area Sports

(OLNEY)  in girls high school basketball – the Highland Tournament will resume with three games tonight : in the 5th place semi-final games – Olney plays Breese Central at 5:00, then Salem plays Belleville West at 6:30, and the 8:00 game will feature a championship bracket semi-final matchup between Nashville and the host Bulldogs – the final four games are set for tomorrow at 10:00, 11:30, 1:00, and 2:30
 
(OLNEY)  in boys high school basketball – the Carmi-White County Invitational will resume with three games tonight – in fact, last night's schedule will be played tonight : it's Olney & Mt Carmel at 5:30 : Carmi & Harrisburg at 7:00 : and Mt Vernon & Fairfield at 8:30 – the tournament's fourth session will be Saturday morning & afternoon, with games at 10:30, 12 noon, & 1:30 – then the final three games will go on as scheduled Saturday night with the Tigers in a final game matchup with the Harrisburg Bulldogs at 8:30

(NEWTON)  also in boys high school hoops tonight – the Newton Eagles will be at home in the NCHS Gym to host the Warriors from Casey-Westfield High – it’ll be jv action at 6:15, with the varsity game at around 7:30  :  meanwhile, NCHS fans are reminded that next Thursday night, the 27th, will be “Senior Night” for the girls high school basketball team – the lone two seniors on the Lady Eagles’ squad will be honored in their final regular season game at NCHS – it’ll also be “Pack the Place Night” at NCHS
 
(OLNEY)  the Olney Wrestling Tigers are preparing for the Apollo Conference Duals coming up tomorrow at the Robinson High School – with weigh-in at 8:00, the duals get started at 9:00 with teams from Olney, Robinson, Effingham, Charleston, & Mt Zion taking part – the Tigers will compete against Charleston in Round 1, against Mt Zion in Round 2, against the host Maroons in Round 3, and against Effingham in Round 4 – the best of luck to the Tigers as they enter the duals with an overall record of 11 wins & 6 losses
 
(OLNEY)  in junior college basketball this weekend – all are invited to the "Coaches versus Cancer" event tomorrow night in "The Dungeon" at Olney Central College – all are encouraged to wear "pink" as teams from Lincoln Trail College in Robinson come to town – it's Lady Blue Knights action at 5:30, followed by Blue Knights basketball at 7:30 – so wear some pink & help with cancer awareness at OCC tomorrow night

(OLNEY)  in junior college basketball last night in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference – the Olney Central College teams swept a conference doubleheader from Kaskaskia :
*  the Blue Knights won the mens game, 66-59 led by Ason Hacker & Jordan Mitchell, each with 16 points, plus Chase Brinkley added 14 points – the Blue Knights improve to 4&1 in the GRAC, now 13&5 overall
*  the Lady Blue Knights won their game with a final score, 69-56 – the Ladies were led in scoring by Tara Wornica with 25 points & Alyssa Like with 19 – the Lady Blue Knights improve to 2&3 in the GRAC, now 6&10 overall : the OCC teams now prepare to host Lincoln Trail in “The Dungeon” this Saturday night
*  in the other GRAC games for men last night : Wabash Valley beat Southwestern Illinois, 77-69 : John A Logan beat Lincoln Trail, 88-63 : the Lake Land at Southeastern Illinois game was cancelled
*  in the other GRAC games for women last night : Wabash Valley beat Southwestern Illinois, 65-50 : Lincoln Trail beat John A Logan, 76-69 : the Lake Land at Southeastern Illinois game was cancelled

(OLNEY)  in girls high school hoops last night – at the Highland Tournament : in a championship bracket semi-final – Edwardsville beat Breese Mater Dei, 68-60 : in the two consolation bracket semi-final games – Teutopolis beat Trenton-Wesclin, 51-32 and Belleville Althoff beat Freeburg, 50-39 : tonight’s schedule, at this point, includes three more semi-final games with the finals currently set for Saturday

(OLNEY)  in high school wrestling this past Tuesday – Olney out-muscled Mt Carmel, 34-30 as the Tigers extend their yearly record to 11&6 on the year – Olney won eight of the fourteen classes – winners include :
*  Aaron Foerster won the 215 pound class
*  Tyler Stuck won the 160 pound class
*  Jake Schmitt won the 145 pound class
*  Mitch Harmon won the 140 pound class
*  Greg Smith won the 130 pound class
*  Dakota Thompson won the 125 pound class
*  Derek Novak won the 125 pound class
*  Colton Carmody won the 112 pound class

(NEWTON)  in boys junior high basketball from last night – St Joe took two from Newton St Thomas : the Wildcats won the 8th grade game, 42-37 – leading St Joe was Klayton Craig with 11 points, Andrew Steber & Ethan Eagleson each added 10 points – the St Joe varsity improves to 14&3 on the year : St Joe also won the 7th grade game, 40-24 – the jv Wildcats are now 10&6 : tonight’s St Joe games with Sigel St Michael is already cancelled – St Joe plays in the Belleville Diocesan Tournament tomorrow night as the #2 seed
 
(OLNEY)  in boys junior high basketball from this past Tuesday night – Olney dropped two games to North Knox, Indiana : the Cubs lost only their third 8th grade game of the year, falling 39-20 – the varsity Cubs are now 14&3 on the year : North Knox also won the 7th grade game, 40-23 – the junior varsity Cubs are now 2&13 : the Cubs are scheduled to host Red Hill tonight at the ERMS Gym in Olney

(NEWTON)  on tonight’s schedule for girls high school basketball – the Newton Lady Eagles are set to play at Lawrenceville in non-conference action while the Olney Lady Tigers are scheduled for a 5th place semi-final game against Breese Central over at the Highland Tournament – listen for possible cancellations

(OLNEY)  tonight’s schedule for boys high school hoops at the Carmi-White County Invitational Tourney has the Olney Tigers in the opening game against Mt Carmel at 5:30, followed by Carmi & Harrisburg at 7:00, then Mt Vernon & Fairfield at 8:30 – stay tuned for possible cancellations and rescheduling

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball last night – Illinois beat Michigan State, 71-62, improving to 4&2 in the Big Ten, now 14&5 overall – the Illini now prepare to host Ohio State this Saturday in Champaign

(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball last night – Newton dropped two non-conference games : St Anthony won the varsity game, 55-37 – for the Eagles, Peyton Wyatt had 19 points & Taylor Kerner added 9 points – Newton is now 11&3 on the year : St Anthony also won the junior varsity game, 63-41 : the Eagles are back in non-conference play this coming Friday night when they’ll host Casey-Westfield

(OLNEY)  in boys high school hoops last night at the Carmi Tournament : Olney held back Mt Vernon, Indiana, beating the Wildcats, 55-52 – the Tigers were led by Brook Pampe’s 24 points, while Michael Fehrenbacher added 12 points – Olney improves to 13&4 : in the other games last night – Fairfield upset Harrisburg, 72-70, and Mt Carmel beat Carmi, 56-51 : the tournament resumes tomorrow night

(OLNEY)  it’s back to junior college basketball tonight in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference as the OCC teams travel to Kaskaskia College near Centralia – it’s the Lady Knights at 5:30 & the Blue Knights at 7:30 : tonight’s other GRAC matchups include Lake Land at Southeastern Illinois south of Eldorado, Lincoln Trail at John A Logan in Carterville, and Southwestern Illinois at Wabash Valley in Mt Carmel

(OLNEY)  it was another full night of Great Rivers Athletic Conference junior college basketball last night :
*  the OCC Blue Knights lost their first conference game last night, falling to Southwestern Illinois, 53-51 as a game-winning 3-pointer fell short at the buzzer – John Michael Jarvis & Chase Brinkley led OCC, each with 11 points – Austin Akers added 10 points – the Blue Knights are now 3&1 in the GRAC, now 12&5 on the year – the Blue Knights are back on the road tomorrow night at Kaskaskia, west of Centralia
*  the OCC Lady Blue Knights won their first conference game last night, beating Southwestern Illinois in overtime, 60-57 – OCC was led in scoring by Jessica Zavoral with 17 points, while Tara Wornica added 16 points – the Lady Blue Knights are now 1&3 in the GRAC, now 5&10 overall – the Lady Blue Knights will play the opener of the GRAC doubleheader tomorrow night at Kaskaskia, with game time at 5:30

(OLNEY)  in girl high school basketball at the Annual Highland Tournament last night – Olney lost to the tournament’s top seed Edwardsville, 62-42 as the Lady Tigers fall to 17&5 on the year – Olney’s top scorers were Taylor Stevenson & Ebany Brumfield with 13 & 12 points respectively – the Lady Tigers fall back in the consolation bracket, set to play Thursday evening at 5:00, in a 5th place semi-final game – the tournament continues with four more games tonight, then three games each tomorrow night & Thurday with the final four games Saturday.

(NEWTON)  in girls non-conference high school hoops last night – Newton split two games with Marshall : the Lady Eagles won the varsity game, 49-48 – Newton was led in scoring by Terra Flowers’ 20 points and Amy Koebele’s 19 points – the Lady Eagles improve to 11&10 on the year : Marshall won the junior varsity game, 38-19 : Newton returns to non-conference action Thursday night, traveling to Lawrenceville

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball Saturday – Illinios lost a tough road game at Wisconsin, 76-66 as the Illini drop to 3&2 in the Big Ten, now 13&5 overall – the Badgers improve to 3&2 in the league, now 13&5 overall – the Illini return home tomorrow night to host Michigan State at the Assembly Hall
 
(OLNEY)  it was a busy Saturday in the junior college basketball Great Rivers Athletic Conference :
*  the OCC Blue Knights made it three wins in a row with a 67-64 victory at Rend Lake – Jordan Mitchell, Ason Hacker, & Austin Akers led OCC, now at 3&0 in the GRAC and 12&4 on the year – the Blue Knights are back on the road tonight, traveling to Belleville, to battle Southwestern Illinois at 7:30
*  the OCC Lady Blue Knights lost to Rend Lake, 79-64, although Tara Wornica & Alyssa Like combined for 42 points – the OCC Ladies fall to 0&3 in the GRAC, now 4&10 on the year – like the men, the Lady Blue Knights travel to Southwestern Illinois tonight for a 5:30 game there in Belleville
*  in the other GRAC games Saturday for men : Southwestern Illinois beat Southeastern Illinois in overtime, 84-80 : Wabash Valley beat John A Logan, 73-56 : Lincoln Trail beat Kaskaskia, 77-72

(NEWTON)  in girls high school basketball – it's a non-conference week with some statewide mid-winter tournaments taking place thru Saturday – the Newton Lady Eagles will be in non-conference play tonight, hosting Marshall in the NCHS Gym – the  action begins with the junior varsity at 6:15
