the Lady Eagles won the varsity game over Robinson, 53-25 – Newton improves to 4-5, now 1-1 in the LIC
* Newton was led by Abby Frohning with 24 points and 4 rebounds
* Renae Russell and Claire Carr each added 6 points apiece
Newton also won the junior varsity game, 26-14
the Lady Eagles are back in action Monday night when they play Red Hill in Bridgeport

the Tigers lost a dual match at home, falling to Mt. Carmel, 24 to 46
Olney won only four of the fourteen individual matches
* Skyler Sutton won the 285 pound match with a fall in 2:58
* Kyle Beasley won the 195 pound match with a fall in 1:11
* Hunter Summitt won the 182 pound match by forfeit

the host Cubs won the 8th grade game over the Junior Eagles, 53-22
* Olney was led by Kitch St. Pierre with 19 points while Chase Travis had 12 points
* Newton was led by Adam Koebele with 8 points and Evan Schafer with 6 points
* the varsity Cubs improve to 9-1 on the year, they are 2-0 in the Junior NEC
Olney also won the 7th grade game, 37-12 as the junior varsity improves to 6-2 on the year
the Cubs are back in action tomorrow afternoon down at the Harrisburg Shootout
* Olney plays Harrisburg in back-to-back games – the 7th grade at 4:00 and the 8th grade teams at 5:15

member schools have approved five amendment proposals in the annual by-law referendum
* the online voting ended this past Tuesday with 609 of Illinois’ 811 member schools (75.1%) taking part
* this was the state’s third highest participation percentage in 21 years of recordkeeping by the IHSA
here’s a summary of the proposals and the vote totals from the membership
    (the numbers in parentheses indicate the total yes, no, and no opinion votes by member schools)
PROPOSAL 6  :  was passed (428-138-41) and will take effect on January 5th, 2018
* grants eligibility to a student who has received a Legislative Waiver, who lives in a unit district with one
   high school, and whose parent is on the faculty of a school in the district – the current by-law says the
   parent must be on the faculty of the high school
PROPOSAL 17  :  was rejected (292-305-10) by a slim thirteen vote tally
* would have reduced the number of summer contact days from 25 down to 20
PROPOSAL 20  :  was passed (435-147-24) and will take effect July 1st, 2018
* allows a baseball or softball team to play more than 5 contests during a tournament, if the tournament
   takes place over the member school’s spring break
PROPOSAL 24  :  was passed (384-201-22)  and will take effect July 1st, 2018
* changes the contest limitation in girls & boys basketball to 31 games exclusive of the IHSA state series 
   and removes the limit on the number of tournaments – the current limitation is a combination of games
   plus tournaments – it also eliminates the limitation on the number of tournaments an individual in girls
   and boys basketball may participate in
PROPOSAL 25  :  was passed (243-154-208) and will take effect July 1st, 2018
* increases the contest limitation in girls & boys bowling from 20 to 25 dates exclusive of postseason
PROPOSAL 27  :  was passed (379-204-25) and will take effect July 1st, 2018
* changes the contest limitation in girls & boys volleyball to 35 games exclusive of the IHSA state series
   and removes the limit on the number of tournaments – the current limitation is a combination of games
   plus tournaments – it also eliminates the limitation on the number of tournaments an individual in girls
   and boys volleyball may participate in

it’s one of the Distinguished Media Service Award winners – Greg Sapp of Effingham

* a life-long Effingham resident, Greg will be recognized for his broadcasting efforts since the mid 1970’s
* award recipients must be nominated by a member IHSA school, Effingham High School in Greg’s case

at the Kaskaskian Classic in Carlyle
* Pinckneyville won the championship game over Okawville, 61-48
* Flora won the third place game by beating Freeburg in overtime, 64-61
* Woodlawn won the fifth place game over the host Indians, 51-50
* Greenville beat Hillsboro in the seventh place game, 57-49
at the Tip-Off Classic in Du Quoin
* the host   won the championship game over Carmi, 59-50
* Sesser-Valier beat Massac County in the third place game, 72-44
at the Murphysboro / Trico Tournament
* Murphysboro beat Harrisburg in the championship game, 65-51
* Chester won the third place game by beating Steeleville, 59-52
* Trico beat Lovejoy in the fifth place game, 61-59
* Red Bud took the seventh place game by beating North Tech in overtime, 55-53

* Olney lost a tough one at home to Robinson in overtime, 66-70
* Newton beat Paris, 56-47
* Red Hill slipped by Lawrenceville, 59-58

 

(OLNEY)  here’s a couple of scores from Saturday in Girls High School Basketball
* Marshall beat Mattoon, 43-39
* Effingham beat Effingham St. Anthony, 46-20

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys Junior High Basketball from Saturday – Olney split two games on the road
the Cubs won the 8th grade game at Effingham, beating St. Anthony, 30-27
* Olney was led by Chase Travis with 14 points and 7 rebounds – Chance Hinton added 10 points
St. Anthony won the 7th grade game, 25-21
while the Olney varsity improves to 7-1, the junior varsity dropped to 5-1 on the year
the Cubs are back in action tomorrow night when they travel to Teutopolis

 

(NEWTON/OLNEY)  it’s back to Girls High School Hoops tonight in the Little Illini Conference
* the Olney Lady Tigers travel to Bridgeport to play Red Hill
* it’s Marshall at Paris
* Casey-Westfield at Robinson
* and Lawrenceville at Flora
in tonight’s lone non-conference game
* the Newton Lady Eagles head south to Albion to play Edwards County
