(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball – the Cardinals were idle with a travel date on Monday
with a limited MLB schedule last night, here’s how the other Midwestern teams did Monday night
* those that won were the Cubs, Royals, Indians, and Rangers
* those that lost were the Reds, Tigers, Braves, and Astros
* along with the Redbirds, others that were idle last night were the Brewers, Pirates, and White Sox
the Cardinals play the first of two tonight at Boston, then four later this weekend in Pittsburgh

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Golf yesterday at the Robinson Invitational at Quail Creek Country Club
Mt. Carmel won the eight team event by beating out 2nd place Lawrenceville / Red Hill, 323 to 338
* Effingham St. Anthony was 3rd at 345, followed by Robinson at 364 and Fairfield at 372
* Marshall was 6th at 394, followed closely by Olney at 397, then Oblong at 458
here’s a look at the top individual golfers on the boys side
* Mt. Carmel’s Blake Golden was the Match Medalist with a low round 71
* St. Anthony’s Luke Ludwig shot a 77
* Fairfield’s Andrew Stewart shot a 79
* Lawrenceville’s Nolan Tewell and Mt. Carmel’s Wade Ruth each shot an 80
* Olney’s top golfer was Coen McDowell with a 94, while Logan Muston shot a 97

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Baseball yesterday – Jasper County picked up another victory
the Junior Eagles shutout Cumberland, 11-0
* Jasper County’s winning pitcher was Ben Meinhart
* the top hitters were Weston Tharp with a double & single and Ben Meinhart with a double
the Junior Eagles are quickly back in action today as they travel to Dieterich

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball yesterday – Jasper County lost a tough game at home in Newton
the Junior Lady Eagles fell to Cumberland, 14-7
* Jasper County’s big hitter on the day was Morgan White
* Kayla Kocher took the loss
the 5-3 Junior Lady Eagles are quickly back in action today at Bridgeport, against Red Hill

(OLNEY)  the 2017 Olney Bicycle Classic is returning to Main Street in downtown Olney on Saturday, September 9th – it all starts with the Richland County Challenge Ride at 8:00 that morning, with registration required by 7:45 – then the TrustBank Family Ride begins at 9:30 with registration by 9:15 – the Kids Races for those ages 2 to 14 will start at 11:00 with registration required for all events by 10:45 – and the Pacific Cycle Stunt Show will finish things up at 12:15, plus Pacific Cycle employees will be on hand to do basic bike safety checks – concessions provided by the OCC Student Senate, plus free event t-shirts available for all participants – for more details or for registration forms, logon at  www.olneychamber.com

(OLNEY)  The Guardian Center will have its fundraising Firecracker 5K Challenge on Saturday, September 2nd, in Grayville – it’s a 5 Kilometer Run / Walk with race day registration that morning from 7:00 to 7:45, followed by start time at 8:00 – the cost is $20 for all entries and t-shirts are guaranteed for all early paid registrants by August 18th – awards will be given to the top three in the various age groups – all proceeds from the Grayville Days event will benefit The Guardian Center, a non-profit organization committed to the protection & healing of physically & sexually abused children & their families – based in Carmi, with satellite offices in Robinson, Mt. Carmel, and Harrisburg, The Guardian Center serves eight Southeastern Illinois counties, including Richland, Crawford, Lawrence, Edwards, Wabash, White, Saline, & Gallatin – for more, call The Guardian Center at  618-382-8247  or get a sign up form at  www.theguardiancenter.org

 

(OLNEY)  a large crowd is expected for this Saturday’s 3rd Annual Father Jerry’s 5K Run / Walk, plus 1 Mile Fun Run in Olney – with late registration starting at 7:00 that morning in Musgrove Park, the 5K will begin at 8:00 – then the 1 Mile Fun Run for kids will start at around 9:00, witn an awards ceremony then to follow – the course will include streets near the Musgrove Park area and to the west, such as portions of Silver, Walnut, and Ludlow Streets – local motorists in & around these areas are asked to be extra cautious during the 8:00 to 10:00 hours this Saturday morning as nearly 300 people will take to the streets – it’s not too late to register, forms are available at the First National Bank in Olney, at Meadowview Dental, and the St. Joseph School in Olney – that’s Saturday morning, the Annual Father Jerry’s 5K Run / Walk in Olney

 

(NEWTON)  the Newton Community High School and its Athletic Club invites everyone to the annual Media Day event at NCHS coming up this Friday night – the Marching Eagles’ pre-game show will kick things off at 6:00 on Chizevsky Field – the Athletic Boosters will be recognized at 6:15, followed by the Cheerleaders, the Eagles Soccer team, the Lady Eagles Volleyball squad, the Lady Eagles Tennis team, the Newton Cross Country runners, then Freshmen Football, and then the Newton Eagle Varsity Football team – concessions will be available and everyone’s invited out to meet this year’s athletes and coaches at NCHS – all of the Newton Eagle and Lady Eagle teams will open their fall schedules throughout next week

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County High School will also be hosting it’s “Meet the Tigers” night this Friday night at the RCHS Athletic Field in Olney – the Marching Tigers will kick things off with a short performance at 6:30 – then all athletes, coaches, and volunteers will be recognized in each fall sport or activity – the Olney Tigers Football team will have a light scrimmage – plus the Richland County Sports Boosters will have drinks and some concessions available for purchase – that’s all this Friday night – while the Olney Tiger Golfers open their fall season today, the rest of the Olney teams open up next week

 

(OLNEY)  an organizational meeting for the Progressive Bowling League will be held tonight at the Olney Bowling Center, starting at 7:00 – anyone interested in joining a league team is encouraged to attend – topics of discussion will include scheduling, rules, and fees – all are invited to attend tonight’s meeting

* the Redbirds won their 8th game in a row, beating the Braves Saturday, 6-5 but lost yesterday, 6-3
here’s how the other Midwestern teams did on Saturday and Sunday
* those that won two were the Brewers, Royals, and Indians
* those that split two were the Cubs, Tigers, Twins, Astros, and Rangers
* those that dropped two were the Pirates, Reds, and White Sox
the Cardinals are idle on this Monday before starting at six game road trip out east
the Redbirds play the first of two tomorrow night at Boston, then four over the weekend in Pittsburgh

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Baseball from this past Saturday
the Jasper County boys came away with the Altamont Tournament Championship
* the Junior Eagles won their first game by beating Brownstown / St. Elmo, 10-0
* Jasper County then beat the host team from Altamont, 5-1
* the Junior Eagles then defeated Dieterich, 15-0
here’s a look at the top players for Jasper County within the three combined game stats
* the winning pitchers were Mason Mulvey, Evan Schafer, and Marc Jansen (no hitter)
* the top hitters included Evan Schafer with three singles and a triple
* Gauge Reynolds had three singles and Owen Mahaffey had a single and double
the Junior Eagles are back in action today as they will host Cumberland at 4:30

the Jasper County girls have been busy – the Junior Lady Eagles lost last Thursday at Casey, 7-0
* despite the loss, Jasper County’s top hitters were Morgan White and Emma Kidwell
the Junior Lady Eagles then competed Saturday at the Altamont Tournament, finishing in 2nd place
* Jasper County lost game one to St. Anthony, 4-2
* Jasper County came back to beat Sullivan, 8-6 – the winning pitcher was Jenna Ochs
* Jasper County then defeated Altamont, 12-0 – the winning pitcher was Ava Kessler
the Junior Lady Eagles are now 5-2 on the year and return to action today as they’ll host Cumberland

 

(OLNEY)  the Olney Junior League Football season began this past Saturday evening in Olney
two of the three Olney teams were in action on the RCHS Athletic Field
* the Olney 5th/6th grade team lost to visiting Mt. Carmel, 32-0
* the Olney 7th/8th grade team also lost to Mt. Carmel, 30-0
* the Olney 3rd/4th grade team did not play this past weekend
the Olney Junior League teams are back in action this coming Saturday
* the two older teams (5th/6th–7th/8th) will host Salem – the younger squad (3rd/4th) is at Lawrenceville

two of the three Olney teams will be in action at home on the RCHS Athletic Field

* the Olney 7th/8th grade team will then host Mt. Carmel at around 7:30, after the first game
* the Olney 3rd/4th grade team does not play this weekend

(OLNEY)  the Richland County High School will also be hosting a special event a week from tonight, August 18th, at the RCHS Athletic Field in Olney – it’s “Meet the Tigers” night as the Marching Tigers will kick things off with a short performance at 6:30 – then all athletes, coaches, and volunteers will be recognized in each fall sport or activity – then the Olney Tigers Football team will have a light scrimmage – plus the Richland County High School Sports Boosters will have concessions available for purchase – that’s all a week from tonight, August 18th, at Richland County High School in Olney – all ages are invited

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Middle School in Olney will be offering sports physicals next Tuesday night in the RCMS cafeteria from 6:00 to 8:00 – representatives from Carle Richland Memorial Hospital and Market Street Medical will administer the physicals at $25 per athlete – call RCMS if any questions

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Sports Boosters will begin selling their Tiger Booster cards tomorrow as student athletes will be going door to door between 10:00 and 12:00 noon – the Tiger Booster cards are priced at two cards for $25 – the cards provide discounts at participating businesses in the area running from September 1st, 2017, thru August 31st, 2018 – the fundraising discount cards will also be on sale at all home football games, including next Friday night’s “Meet the Tigers” night at RCHS – the Tiger Booster cards are available from any Richland County student athlete and the cards can also be purchased at the Richland County High School, Middle School, or Elementary School – thanks for supporting our athletes

* the Redbirds beat the Royals for the third consecutive night by the score, 8-5

* those that lost were the Cubs, Brewers, Pirates, Indians, Braves, and Astros
the Cardinals are back at home tonight for a fourth game in a row against the KC Royals in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  at the Junior League Baseball Central Regional Tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana
the top eight teams began the single elimination round portion of the tournament yesterday
the four quarter-final games were played on Wednesday
* one of the top seeds, Iowa (4-0) eliminated Minnesota (1-3), 15-3
* the other top seed, Michigan (5-0) eliminated Kentucky (1-4), 12-2
* a 3rd seed, Wisconsin (2-2) eliminated the host team from Fort Wayne (3-1), 13-9
* and 2nd seeded Warren Park from Illinois was eliminated by Ohio (3-2), 8-6
   * the Warren Park team finished the tournament with two wins and three losses
the tournament’s final three games are scheduled for today in Fort Wayne
* a semi-final matchup between Iowa and Wisconsin at 11:00
* then the other semi-final between Michigan and Ohio at 2:00
* the two winners will square off in the championship game later this evening at 5:30

(NEWTON)  with the IHSA Fall Sports all getting underway with their regular season schedules within the next two or three weeks, the Newton Community High School and its Athletic Club invites everyone to the annual Media Day event at NCHS coming up Friday evening, August 18th – with football pictures to be taken at 5:00, the Marching Eagles’ pre-game show will run from 6:00 to 6:15 on Chizevsky Field – the Athletic Boosters will be recognized at 6:15, the Cheerleaders will be introduced at 6:20, the Eagles Soccer team will be recognized at 6:30, the Lady Eagles Volleyball squad will be noted at 6:35, the Lady Eagles Tennis team will be introduced at 6:40, the Newton Cross Country runners will be recognized at 6:45, then Freshmen Football at 6:50, and the Newton Eagle Varsity Football team introduced at 6:55 – concessions will be available and everyone is invited out to meet this school year’s athletes and coaches at NCHS
