* spring training yesterday  :  the White Sox & Astros tied at five  :  the Cubs & Reds were both idle
* season opener  :  Cardinals beat the Marlins, 4-1 – Redbirds have a weekend series in Milwaukee
* regular season matchups today  :  Cubs & Nationals  :  Reds & Marlins  :  the White Sox are idle


 
(OLNEY)  in high school softball yesterday – Olney beat Noble / Clay City, 6-1 as the host Lady Tigers out-hit the Lady Wildcats, 8 to 2 – Olney’s top hitters were Elizabeth Walker with two hits & two RBI, and Kelsey Shipman & Kenzie Zwilling, each with two hits & one RBI – the Lady Wildcat’s top hitter was Macy Lenear with Noble / Clay City’s only two hits and only RBI – while Olney improves to 10&4 on the year, Noble / Clay City drops back to 7&3 – in action coming up, the Lady Tigers will host Lawrenceville in a 2:00 game tomorrow afternoon while the Lady Wildcats are scheduled to play today at Newton

 

(OLNEY)  in high school baseball yesterday – Olney lost a tough one-run game to the defending Class 2A State Champions from Teutopolis, 1-0 as each team had four hits apiece – the top Tiger hitters were Justin Bailey with two hits & Michael Fehrenbacher with a double – although taking the loss, Alex Craig pitched well for the Tigers, allowing only one run and striking out three in six innings of work – the Tigers drop to 6&5 on the year and return to action today, scheduled to host Dieterich at Bill Millspaugh Field in Olney

    
 
(OLNEY)  in junior varsity softball recently – the jv Lady Tigers won two of their last three games  :
* Olney beat Edwards County, 5-2 last week – Brandi Foster got the win – top hitter was Keregan Coleman
* Olney lost to Effingham on Saturday, 8-5 as the junior varsity Lady Tigers out-hit the junior varsity Lady Hearts, 8 to 6 – the top Olney hitters were Haley Ochs and Bayli Spillman
* the jv Lady Tigers then beat Effingham, 11-9 as Olney out-hit the jv Hearts, 16 to 7 – the top Olney hitters were Caitlyn Monts & Sydney Shan – pitchers Kayla Shewmake & Brandi Foster combined for the victory
* the jv Lady Tigers are now 4&2 on the year with the next real action Saturday against Mt Zion

(NEWTON)  the Ste. Marie Men’s Softball League will begin May 21st and continue thru August 19th – all teams are welcome with the $150 entry fee due by April 14th – plus a kickoff tournament on May 19th is open to all teams with an entry fee of $100 per team – for more details, call 843-0261 or 843-5051

 

(OLNEY)  the OCC Foundation will host its 11th annual “golf outing” on Friday, May 4th, at the Richland Country Club with lunch at 11:30 and tee-time at 1:00 – the event includes 18 holes of golf in a scramble format & the chance to win prizes – entry fee is $60 per person or $240 for a team of four – the signup deadline is April 27th – all to benefit the Olney Central College Foundation – call OCC today


(NEWTON)  the 6th annual Jasper County Chamber of Commerce Bass Tournament on Newton Lake is set for April 28th, from 6:00 that morning to 2:00 that afternoon – it’s an 80% payout & a guaranteed $500 Big Bass – the $60 entry fee must be paid in cash that morning with a check-in time of 5:30 – take off by draw, not in order of entry – for more tournament information, call Chris at 618-553-4319
