(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball on Wednesday – Lance Berkman went 3 for 4 with 2 rbi’s and run scored to back five solid innings from Jaime Garcia as Cardinals edge the Nationals, 5-3 in the nightcap of a Wednesday double header, the Cardinals lost 8 -6 in the opener.  The cubs split a doubleheader with the Padres and Tampa beat the White Sox.

(NEWTON)  in high school baseball yesterday – Newton Eagles defeated Flora 9 to 8.  The Eagles scored 9 runs on 11 hits.  The Eagles were led at the plate by A. J. Hyatt, 3 for 4 with a triple, two singles, and RBI.  Mark Mammoser was 2 for 4 with two RBI’s.  The winner pitcher was Clayton Bailey.

(NEWTON)  in boys high school track & field from this past Monday’s Nick Volk Fresh/Soph Invitational – the host Eagles finished second behind winner Mattoon – Effingham was third, Robinson was fourth, the Olney Tigers were fifth, and Paris was last – here’s the list of top finishers from Newton and Olney :
*  Olney’s Dirk Washburn won the 200 meter dash with a new meet record of 23.09
*  Newton’s Brandon Tolliver Goode won the pole vault with a new meet record of 13 feet
*  Olney’s Dirk Washburn won the 100 meter dash
*  Newton’s Lucas Stone was second in the 800 meter run & second in the high jump
*  Newton’s Dylan Davidson was second in the long jump
*  Olney’s Connor Schonert was third in the 1600 meter run
*  Newton’s Colten Schultz was third in the 400 meter dash
*  Olney’s Colton Carmody was third in the pole vault
*  Newton’s Blake Ebeling was third in the high jump
*  Olney’s Nick Dobbs was third in the 800 meter run
*  Newton’s Jesse Kinder was third in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles
*  Newton’s Kyle Frohning was fourth in the discus
*  Olney’s Anthony Helm was fourth in the shot put
*  Newton’s Corey Davison was fourth in the 800 meter run
*  Newton’s Dylan Davidson was fourth in the 400 meter dash
*  Newton’s Marcus Pilman was fourth in the 200 meter dash
*  Newton’s Jesse Kinder was fourth in the 100 meter hurdles
*  Newton had three second place finishes in the 3200 meter relay, 1600 meter relay, and 800 meter relay
