* the Redbirds came from behind to beat the Pirates, 4-3

(OLNEY)  in High School Football last night – Olney wins its Annual Shrine Game on the road
the Tigers beat Flora, 27-16
* Olney had 404 total yards while holding the host Wolves to 311 total yards
* the Tigers completed 16 passes for 286 yards thru the air while running the ball 37 times for 118 yards
Olney improves to 2-3 on the year, now 2-2 in the Little Illini Conference
the Tigers return home next Friday night to host Paris at RCHS after four weeks in a row on the road

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Football last night – Newton got back on track with a victory at home
after losing their first LIC game since 2014 a week ago last night, the Eagles beat Robinson, 70-28
* Newton had 370 total yards while the visiting Maroons gained 318 total yards
* the Eagles ran only 20 times for 282 yards on the ground and completed only 5 passes for 88 yards
Newton improves to 4-1 on the year, now 3-1 in the Little Illini Conference

the Tigers beat Mt. Carmel, 4-3
* Trey Nosek and Jacob McVicker each scored 2 goals apiece for Olney
* two of the goals were assisted by Kye Stallard and Jacob McVicker
the Soccer Tigers are quickly back in action tomorrow traveling north to Charleston

the Lady Tigers beat Effingham, 7-2 as Olney won five of the six singles matches, all in two sets each
* Logan Kauble won the #1 singles match, 6-4, 6-2
* Cait O’Dell won the #3 singles match, 6-3, 6-2
* Riley Doll won the #4 singles match, 6-0, 6-0
* Katie Hostetter won the #5 singles match, 6-0, 6-1
* Paige Steber won the #6 singles match, 6-4, 6-0
Olney also won two of the three doubles matches, both wins in two sets each

* the Match Medalist was Cisne’s Jordan Hosick with an even par 35
* Olney’s best round came from Coen McDowell with a 40
* teammates Ryan Tolliver shot a 44 and both Logan Muston and Ethan Rodgers carded at 46

the Lady Eagles won the varsity match over Lawrenceville in two sets, 25-12, 25-4

the Lady Tigers lost the varsity match to Edwards County in two close sets, 22-25, 21-25

Olney lost the junior varsity match in three sets – the freshman match was split with one set win each

here’s the top runners for the Cubs on the varsity 1.9 mile course
* Brooks Julian finished in 3rd place – then teammates Hudson Lathrop 5th and Drew Blank (7th)
Olney also won the junior varsity 1.4 mile race, followed by St. Joe, Fairfield, Allendale, and Geff
* the Cubs’ top jv runner was Ian Winkler finishing 1st – teammate Brayden McVicker was 2nd

* Allison Harness finished in 3rd place – then teammates Carley Greenwood 7th and Allyson Mitchell 8th
Olney was 2nd in the junior varsity race, losing to Allendale by only 6 points, 52 to 46 – St. Joe was 3rd

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Men’s Basketball League is looking for teams and players for the upcoming 2017-2018 season with the first games scheduled for November 2nd in Claremont – the team deadline to sign up is Friday, October 27th, although the entry fees have yet to be set – it’s all part of the non-profit Richland County Athletic Association – for more details, call Ed at  618-320-9590

 

(NEWTON)  the Newton Elmentary PTO will have its Annual Eagle Challenge Color Fun 5K Run / Walk and One Mile Kids Run on Saturday, September 30th – it’s registration at 7:00 that morning on the southwest corner of the square in downtown Newton – the race will start at 8:00 with the Kids Run to follow at 8:10 – the cost is $20 per adult and $10 per child and it includes t-shirt for all taking part – the registration forms are available at the Newton Elementary School or at the Newton Press-Mentor office – while the signup deadline was last Friday, late forms will be accepted on race day – all are invited to come out, get splashed with orange & blue for Homecoming Week, and help raise funds for the local PTO

* the host Tigers finished 3rd with a 189 score
the day’s top golfers included a three way tie for the Match Medalist
* Mt. Carmel’s Dawson Brown, Colton Etzkorn, & Brayden Peterson all shot a 2 over par 37 on the front 9
* Olney’s top score was Coen McDowell’s 45, while Zach Duenas shot a 47

Newton jumped out to 7-0 lead after one quarter with only points scored in the first 15 minutes
* a 4 yard TD run by Dawson Phillips with an extra point kick by Ben Carr
the Eagles were outscored 22 to 10 in the second quarter adding a touchdown and field goal
* a 13 yard TD run by Connor Bierman with a Ben Carr extra point kick
* a 32 yard field goal by Ben Carr
Newton was again outscored in the third quarter 8 to 7 as the Eagles added a touchdown

the Tigers fell at Marshall, up in Clark County, 20-28 as Olney drops to 1-3 overall, now 1-2 in the LIC
after falling behind on a Marshall TD, Olney scored twice for a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter
* a 54 yard TD run by Peyton Blanton with an extra point kick by Kye Stallard
* a 39 yard TD pass to Gunnar Michels from Kaleb Foster with a Kye Stallard extra point kick
the Tigers were then outscored 8-0 in the second quarter as Marshall led at halftime, 15-14
Olney was held scoreless and was outscored in the third quarter, trailing 21-14 at the end of three frames
the Tigers added their final score on a fourth quarter touchdown leading to the slim 8-point loss

(NEWTON)  the Newton Elmentary PTO will have its Annual Eagle Challenge Color Fun 5K Run / Walk and One Mile Kids Run on Saturday, September 30th – it’s registration at 7:00 that morning on the southwest corner of the square in downtown Newton – the race will start at 8:00 with the Kids Run to follow at 8:10 – the cost is $20 per adult and $10 per child and it includes t-shirt for all taking part – the registration forms are available at the Newton Elementary School or at the Newton Press-Mentor office – while the signup deadline was last Friday, late forms will be accepted on race day – all are invited to come out, get splashed with orange & blue for Homecoming Week, and help raise funds for the local PTO

(NEWTON)  in Boys High School Cross Country yesterday at Sam Parr State Park near Newton
Robinson came away with a 5 point victory by beating out 2nd place Olney, 25 to 30
* Effingham was 3rd in the four team meet with 81 points, followed by Newton

* Robinson’s Lukas Baird won the race followed by teammates Kobe Lorance and Wyatt Bonnell
