(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball over the weekend – the Cardinals dropped two to the Pirates
* after winning the first two games of the series, the Redbirds lost Saturday, 6-4 and last night, 6-3
here’s how the other Midwestern teams did on Saturday and Sunday
* those that won two were the Cubs, Brewers, and Twins
* those that split two were the Reds, White Sox, Royals, Indians, Tigers, Astros, Braves, and Rangers
the Cardinals are idle on this Monday – they’ll open a six game home stand tomorrow night in St. Louis
it’s the first of three against the San Diego Padres, then the Tampa Bay Rays are in town this weekend

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior League Football – all three Olney teams were in action this past Saturday
* Olney’s 3rd/4th grade team beat Lawrenceville, 30-22 to win their first game of the fall season
* Olney’s 5th/6th grade team lost to Salem, 28-14
* Olney’s 7th/8th grade team dropped a close one to Salem, 34-32
all three Olney teams will be back in action this Saturday at home against teams from Lawrenceville

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Baseball from Saturday – Jasper County won again on the road
the Junior Eagles beat Lawrenceville, 18-7
* the winning pitcher was Ben Meinhart
* the top hitters were Evan Schafer and Ben Meinhart, each with two hits and each with a home run
* Gage Reynolds had three hits, plus Mason Mulvey and Owen Mahaffey each had a pair of singles
the 8-0 Junior Eagles are back in action today as they’ll host Charleston in Newton

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball from Saturday – Jasper County split two games at home
the Junior Lady Eagles lost the first of two games to Windsor / Stewardson-Strasburg, 14-0
but the Jasper County girls came back to win the second game over Windsor / Stewardson-Strasburg, 8-3
the Junior Lady Eagles are quickly back in action today as they’ll host Charleston in Newton

(NEWTON)  in Girls Junior High Cross Country from last Thursday afternoon
Jasper County hosted its first meet of the fall season at Sam Parr State Park, northeast of Newton
* Effingham St. Anthony won the six team event by beating out 2nd place Casey-Westfield, 50 to 57
* the host Junior Lady Eagles finished two points back, in 3rd place, with 59 points
* Paris Mayo was 4th at 115, then Effingham at 123 and Okaw Valley at 137
with a total of seventeen runners, here’s the top finishers for Jasper County
* Cierrah Utley, Rylea Borgic, Alexis Hetzer, Taylor Slough, April Howard, and Macy Barthlemey
the Jasper County girls are back on the course tomorrow on the road at Teutopolis

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys Junior High Cross Country from last Thursday afternoon
Jasper County hosted its first meet of the fall season at Sam Parr State Park, northeast of Newton
* St. Anthony won the eight team event by beating out 2nd place Cowden-Herrick / Beecher City, 31 to 81
* the host Junior Eagles finished in 3rd place with 98 points, followed by Casey-Westfield at 112
* Effingham was 5th at 114, followed by Okaw Valley at 144, Paris Mayo at 145, and Teutopolis at 195
with only seven runners, due to four others playing baseball, here’s the top Jasper County runners
* Clay Bergbower, Luke Weber, Brock Probst, Caden Nichols, Ian Fehrenbacher, and Isaac Flowers
the Jasper County boys are back on the course tomorrow on the road at Teutopolis

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Tennis Saturday at the Champaign Centennial Invitational
there were sixteen total teams that participated in the annual sports event
* Belleville East won by beating out 2nd place Wheaton Warrenville South - O'Fallon was 3rd
* Warren Township and Lincoln Way East tied for 4th, followed by Belleville West in 6th place
* Effingham St. Anthony was 7th, with The Latin School 8th and Hinsdale South 9th
* host Champaign Centennial was 10th, Danville was 11th, Teutopolis and Champaign Central tied for 12th
* Conant High and Galesburg tied for 14th, while Urbana High finished 16th

(Fraternal Order of Police) will have a fundraising Golf Outing on Sunday afternoon, September 24th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – while sponsorships are now available for area businesses and/or individuals, teams of four players can also now sign up at a cost of $200 per team – it all begins with a pulled pork lunch at 11:30 and a shotgun start at 1:00 – registration is requested by September 8th – if any questions, call Kevin at  618-839-5922  or the Country Club in Olney

(OLNEY)  The Guardian Center will have its fundraising Firecracker 5K Challenge on Saturday, September 2nd, in Grayville – it’s a 5 Kilometer Run / Walk with race day registration that morning from 7:00 to 7:45, followed by start time at 8:00 – the cost is $20 for all entries and t-shirts are guaranteed for all early paid registrants by August 18th – awards will be given to the top three in the various age groups – all proceeds from the Grayville Days event will benefit The Guardian Center, a non-profit organization committed to the protection & healing of physically & sexually abused children & their families – based in Carmi, with satellite offices in Robinson, Mt. a huge “thank you” goes out to all the local fans and supporters who turned out for various events last night
* to the “Meet the Tigers” event at Richland County High School in Olney
* to the “Media Day” event at Newton Community High School
as all the athletes, coaches, sponsors, and volunteers were recognized in all the fall sports and activities
all of the high school fall sports in Olney and Newton will begin their fall schedules this upcoming week

the Olney 5th & 6th Graders lost their season opener at home to Mt. Carmel, 26-0
here’s a look at Olney’s offensive statistics
* the Olney runners gained 65 yards on 21 carries
* Derrik Kramer ran for 39 yards on 6 carries
* Jacob Beard also had 6 carries, gaining 15 total yards
* thru the air, Derrik Kramer threw 7 passes and completed 2 for a total of 18 yards
* receptions were made by Harley Coram and Brayden Beard
defensively, the Olney middle-age team had 23 total tackles
* Dirks Weiler led the team with 4 tackles
* Brandyn Mullins had 3 tackles
* six players each had 2 tackles apiece
the 0-1 Olney 5th & 6th Grade team is back in action this Saturday at home against Salem

(OLNEY)  the Richland County High School will also be hosting it’s “Meet the Tigers” night tomorrow night at the RCHS Athletic Field in Olney – the Marching Tigers will kick things off with a short performance at 6:30 – then all athletes, coaches, and volunteers will be recognized in each fall sport or activity – the Olney Tigers Football team will have a light scrimmage – plus the Richland County Sports Boosters will have drinks and some concessions available for purchase – that’s all tomorrow night – while the Olney Golfers opened their season earlier this week, the rest of the Olney teams open up next week

* the Redbirds fell to the ground hard last night as they were beat up by the Red Sox, 10-4

* those that lost were the Cubs, Pirates, Royals, Tigers, and Twins
the Cardinals play their final game in Boston tonight before heading to Pittsburgh tomorrow night

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Golf yesterday at the Effingham / Teutopolis Invitational
Effingham St. Anthony won the five team event by beating out 2nd place St. Thomas More, 328 to 336
* Effingham was 3rd at 358, followed by Teutopolis at 404 and Oblong at 439

* the Match Medalist was St. Thomas More’s Alaina Bowie with a low round 64
* St. Anthony’s Ava Wegman shot a 77
* Oblong’s best round came from Nyah Laino with a 95

the Junior Eagles beat Dieterich, 17-5
* Jasper County’s winning pitcher was Weston Tharp
* the top hitter was Evan Schafer with three doubles, while Evan Paul hit a home run
* Owen Mahaffey doubled and singled, while Guage Reynolds had a pair of singles
the 5-0 Junior Eagles are back in action tomorrow at home in Newton when they host North Clay

the Olney 7th & 8th Graders lost their season opener at home to Mt. Carmel, 30-0

* Carter Beard ran for 27 yards on 3 carries
* Troy McDannel carried the ball once for 15 yards
* three other Olney runners had negative yardage totally 21 yards on 16 carries
* the Olney offense had 1 attempted pass that was incomplete
defensively, the Olney older team had 43 total tackles
* Carter Beard and Troy McDannel each had 6 tackles
* Ronald Baskerville and Kaden Gertch each had 4 tackles
* Gage Nutall, Zachariah Wease, and Devin Foster each had 3 tackles

(OLNEY)  the 2017 Olney Bicycle Classic is returning to Main Street in downtown Olney on Saturday, September 9th – it all starts with the Richland County Challenge Ride at 8:00 that morning, with registration required by 7:45 – then the TrustBank Family Ride begins at 9:30 with registration by 9:15 – the Kids Races for those ages 2 to 14 will start at 11:00 with registration required for all events by 10:45 – and the Pacific Cycle Stunt Show will finish things up at 12:15, plus Pacific Cycle employees will be on hand to do basic bike safety checks – concessions provided by the OCC Student Senate, plus free event t-shirts available for all participants – for more details or for registration forms, logon at  www.olneychamber.com

(OLNEY)  The Guardian Center will have its fundraising Firecracker 5K Challenge on Saturday, September 2nd, in Grayville – it’s a 5 Kilometer Run / Walk with race day registration that morning from 7:00 to 7:45, followed by start time at 8:00 – the cost is $20 for all entries and t-shirts are guaranteed for all early paid registrants by August 18th – awards will be given to the top three in the various age groups – all proceeds from the Grayville Days event will benefit The Guardian Center, a non-profit organization committed to the protection & healing of physically & sexually abused children & their families – based in Carmi, with satellite offices in Robinson, Mt. (OLNEY)  the Richland County High School Marching Tiger Color Guard will have a fundraising “car wash” this Saturday at Wood’s Auto Body, along South Route 130, in Olney – that’s from 10:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon – the cost is a simple money donation – please stop by and help out

 

(OLNEY)  a large crowd is expected for this Saturday’s 3rd Annual Father Jerry’s 5K Run / Walk, plus 1 Mile Fun Run in Olney – with late registration starting at 7:00 that morning in Musgrove Park, the 5K will begin at 8:00 – then the 1 Mile Fun Run for kids will start at around 9:00, witn an awards ceremony then to follow – the course will include streets near the Musgrove Park area and to the west, such as portions of Silver, Walnut, and Ludlow Streets – local motorists in & around these areas are asked to be extra cautious during the 8:00 to 10:00 hours this Saturday morning as nearly 300 people will take to the streets – it’s not too late to register, forms are available at the First National Bank in Olney, at Meadowview Dental, and the St. Joseph School in Olney – that’s Saturday morning, the Annual Father Jerry’s 5K Run / Walk in Olney

 

(NEWTON)  the Newton Community High School and its Athletic Club invites everyone to the annual Media Day event at NCHS coming up this Friday night – the Marching Eagles’ pre-game show will kick things off at 6:00 on Chizevsky Field – the Athletic Boosters will be recognized at 6:15, followed by the Cheerleaders, the Eagles Soccer team, the Lady Eagles Volleyball squad, the Lady Eagles Tennis team, the Newton Cross Country runners, then Freshmen Football, and then the Newton Eagle Varsity Football team – concessions will be available and everyone’s invited out to meet this year’s athletes and coaches at NCHS – all of the Newton Eagle and Lady Eagle teams will open their fall schedules throughout next week
