(OLNEY)  in boys high school basketball last night – the Olney Tigers won the Fairfield Regional Championship game, with a 45-40 victory over Flora – Olney’s Brook Pampe led both teams in scoring with 19 points, while Michael Fehrenbacher’s 13 points pushed him over the 1,000-point plateau for his high school career – Flora’s all-time leading scorer, Paul Knapp, led the Wolves with 18 points, with fellow senior Nick Painter adding 10 – while Flora ends a successful season at 27&4, Olney improves to 27&4 and moves on to a Sectional Semi-Final matchup with Pinckneyville down at Eldorado next Tuesday night

* Class 2A  :  Quincy Notre Dame beat Aurora Central Catholic, 74-36

the Class 1A finals are this afternoon with the Class 2A finals later tonight in Redbird Arena in Normal


 
(NEWTON)  several area girls competed in the State 1A and 2A 3-point showdown in Normal yesterday  :
* Class 2A  :  a Carlyle junior, Paige Rakers, won the final four shootout yesterday afternoon, hitting 11 three pointers in the first round, then nailing three out of four in a shoot-off  :  Mt Carmel’s sophomore, Tyra Buss, hit 6 three-balls to come up short  :  Rakers will now move on to represent Class 2A in the Queen of the Hill competition next weekend  :  other area girls who made it into the final top 32 shooters were freshman Janelle Gebben of Teutopolis and junior Amber Bruno of Vandalia
* Class 1A  :  an Arlington Heights freshman, Jessica Moriarty from Christian Liberty Academy, won the final four competition and advances to represent Class 1A in the showdown next weekend  :  other area girls who made it into the final top 32 shooters were sophomore Morgan Walker of North Clay / Louisville, sophomore Amanda Geiger of Christ Our Rock Centralia, and junior Tiffany Shull of Cumberland

 

(OLNEY)  it’s back to junior college basketball in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference today  :
* the OCC teams are at home to host Wabash Valley College for their Coaches versus Cancer “White Out” event in the Olney Central College Gym – with everyone encouraged to wear white, various prizes will be awarded at halftime of the men’s game – it’s Lady Knights at 5:30 and Blue Knights at around 7:30
* with only three more GRAC dates remaining, here’s the other Saturday matchups  :  Rend Lake will host John A Logan this afternoon  :  Lincoln Trail plays at Southeastern Illinois tonight  :  and Lake Land will host Southwestern Illinois just south of Mattoon

* Class 3A @ Breese  :  Salem beat East St. Louis Senior, 54-43
* Class 3A @ Taylorville  :  Springfield High beat Chatham Glenwood, 83-46
* Class 4A @ Bloomington  :  Edwardsville beat Moline, 59-30
the Class 3A and 4A Super-Sectionals are next Monday

 
 
(OLNEY)  there were only two games last night in the Richland County Mens 4-on-4 Basketball League as the regular season schedule came to a close  :  Friday Nite Lites beat The Bulls, 83-34  :  The Zoolanders beat The Salukis, 89-71  :  the League’s year-ending tournament will begin next Thursday, March 1st, at the Claremont Recreation Center – there will be no games next Monday night in preparation of the tournament

* Class 1A Semi-Final  :  LeRoy plays Freeport Aquin this afternoon at 12:00 noon

(OLNEY)  in junior college basketball last night – the OCC teams dropped a doubleheader at Kaskaskia  :
* the Blue Knights lost, 83-72 – now 22&5 on the year, they’re still in first place in the GRAC at 11&3
* the Lady Knights lost, 80-70 – now at 17&10 overall, they fall back to fifth place in the GRAC at 8&6
* OCC’s back in play with a Coaches vs Cancer doubleheader at home with Wabash Valley Saturday night


 
(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball last night – at the IHSA Class S Regional in Fairfield  :
* Olney won the first semi-final game, turning away a stubborn Fairfield team, 47-37 – improving to 26&4 on the year, the Tigers were led in scoring by Michael Fehrenbacher with 18 points & Joel Eagleson with 13 points – the Mules finish the year at 21&10, led in scoring by senior Tyler Hutcheson with 15 points – the Olney Tigers return for the championship game tomorrow night at 7:30, back at “The Mule Barn”
* Newton had its successful season end with a 70-50 loss to Flora – the Eagles were led in scoring by senior Peyton Wyatt with 21 points, while Elijah Knepper added 13 points – Newton finishes the year with an overall record of 23&6 – the Wolves move into tomorrow night’s championship game against Olney

* Newton Jasper County swept a pair of matches from Hutsonville-Palestine during 8th Grade Recognition Night this past Tuesday  :  winning the 8th grade match in two games  :  winning the 7th grade match in two
* also swept a pair of matches from Olney at the Jasper County Junior High School  :  winning the 8th grade match in two games, 27-25 & 25-22  :  winning the 7th grade game in three games, 20-25, 25-12, & 25-23
* at the Charleston 8th Grade Tournament last Saturday – Newton Jasper County lost three matches  :  to Charleston in two games  :  to Pana in three games  :  and to Danville North Ridge in two games
* and sweeping two matches last Thursday against Sigel St Michael’s  :  winning the 8th grade match in two games, 25-15 & 25-11  :  winning the 7th grade match in three matches, 25-14, 19-25, & 15-12
* the Newton Jasper County girls return to volleyball action this afternoon traveling to Robinson


 
(OLNEY)  in junior high wrestling action from last Sunday up at Tolono  :
* the Olney Cubs Wrestling Club had 15 young men competing
* the three champions were Kitch St. Pierre, Zach Shoulders, & Kyle Beasley
* second place finishers were Hunter Summitt, Ean Pottorff, Aidan McDowell, & Noah Egleston
* finishing with the lone third place was Login Martin
* the Olney Wrestling Cubs will travel to Herrin this coming Saturday for their regional tournament

 

(OLNEY)  in action earlier this week in the Richland County Mens 4-on-4 Basketball League  :  it was Berryville Vineyards with a 90-51 upset victory over Repeat or Bust to win the regular season title  :  also, The Heels beat The Zoolanders, 106-80  :  The Salukis beat The Bulls, 117-47  :  the League’s regular season schedule ends tonight at the Claremont Recreation Center – the tournament begins on March 1st

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball last night – Illinois lost to Ohio State, 83-67 as the host Buckeyes shot 65% from the field and improve to 23&5 overall, now 11&4 in the Big Ten Conference – now at 16&12, 5&10 in the League, the Illini return to action this Sunday as they’ll host Iowa in Champaign


 
(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball last night – Newton won its regional quarter-final game against Carmi, 73-52 as the Eagles advance to tonight’s second semi-final game at the Fairfield Class 2A Regional down in Wayne County – now at 23&5 on the year, the Eagles were led in scoring last night by Peyton Wyatt’s 20 points, while Dylan Davidson & Elijah Knepper each added 12 points apiece – the 2nd-seeded Eagles will now face 3rd-seeded Flora as the Wolves beat Lawrenceville in last night’s first game, 73-31 – top-seeded Olney will play the host Mules in the first game this evening at 6:00, then Newton & Flora hook up at 8:10 – the only Newton Eagle to advance in the three-point showdown was Elijah Knepper

(OLNEY)  Olney Tigers regional tickets are on sale today in the ERHS Office – for the general public from 8:30 this morning until 2:00 this afternoon – the Fairfield High School doors will open at 5:00 this evening with the Tiger game at 6:00 tonight – the gym will then be cleared after the Olney game before the Newton & Flora game – Olney fans can buy tickets for tonight’s second game if they present their Olney / Fairfield game ticket stub, that is if tickets are still available for the second game tonight

 

(NEWTON)  Newton Eagle regional tickets are currently on sale at the NCHS Office – for the general public from now until 12 noon – the limit is at four tickets per person – after 12 noon, folks can buy as many tickets as they’d like – the tickets are for the second game tonight only between Newton & Flora
