(OLNEY)  in junior college basketball last night at Olney Central College – the OCC teams split their GRAC home openers with the teams from Lake Land College, from just south of Mattoon  :
*  the Blue Knights beat the Lakers, 81-73 – OCC was led in scoring by Trivante Bloodman’s 26 points, while Jordan Mitchell had 25 points – the Blue Knights improve to 2&0 in the GRAC, now 12&2 overall
*  the Lady Knights lost a tough one to Lake Land, 97-95 – OCC’s Alyssa Like had 31 points, while Jessica Zavoral & Tara Wornica combined for 42 points – the Lady Knights are 9&4 overall, 1&1 in the GRAC
*  the OCC teams are back in GRAC action tomorrow night hosting John A Logan at 5:30 and 7:30

 

(NEWTON)  in girls high school basketball last night – Olney took two from Newton  :  the Lady Tigers won the varsity game, 56-49 – the leading scorers were Morgan Swingler with 11 points for Newton and Jennifer Luna with 14 points for Olney – the Lady Tigers improve to 14&7 overall, 8&1 in the Apollo – the Lady Eagles drop to 11&8 overall, 3&6 in the Apollo  :  Olney won the jv game, 47-27  :  both teams are back at it Thursday night – Newton will host Salem & Olney will host Mt Zion, both in Apollo action


 
(OLNEY)  elsewhere in the Apollo Conference from last night  :  Robinson beat Charleston, 48-34  :  Paris beat Mt Zion, 54-38  :  and league-leading Salem defeated Effingham, 54-45

 
(NOBLE)  in girls high school hoops last night – Noble / Clay City lost to Red Hill, 47-22 – the Lady Wildcats were led by Erin Taylor with 12 points, while Deanna Taylor added 7 points – now at 6&9 on the year, the Lady Wildcats will host Palestine-Hutsonville in Noble this Thursday night

(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball tonight – it’s another full schedule in the Apollo Conference – the Newton Eagles are at home tonight to host the Olney Tigers – the other Apollo matchups this evening have Mt Zion at Paris, Charleston at Robinson, and Salem at Effingham – it’s jv action starting at 6:15

 

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball – Illinois will host Ohio State in the Assembly Hall at Champaign tonight – another Big Ten battle as both teams enter at 3&1, tied for 2nd place in the conference standings

(OLNEY)  in men’s college basketball from the weekend – Illinois won its Big Ten battle at home against Nebraska, beating the Cornhuskers at the Assembly Hall, 59-54 – the Fighting Illini improve to 14&3 overall, now 3&1 in the Big Ten – Nebraska drops to 8&7 overall, still winless in the Big Ten at 0&4 – Illinois now prepares for a huge Big Ten matchup at home, coming up tomorrow night against Ohio State


 
(NEWTON)  also in men’s Big Ten college basketball over the weekend  :  Ohio State beat Iowa, 76-47  :  Indiana beat Penn State, 88-82  :  Michigan beat Wisconsin, 59-41  :  Purdue beat Minnesota, 79-66


 
(OLNEY)  in men’s junior college basketball Saturday night – the OCC Blue Knights won their GRAC opener, with an 82-63 victory over Southeastern Illinois – with four men in double figure scoring, the OCC men are now 11&2 on the year – the Blue Knights have their GRAC home opener tonight with Lake Land


 
(OLNEY)  in women’s junior college basketball Saturday night – the OCC Lady Knights also won their GRAC opener, beating Southeastern Illinois, 78-63 – the OCC Ladies improve to 9&3 on the year and now prepare for their GRAC home opener tonight against Lake Land – game time this evening at 5:30 at OCC

* Wabash Valley swept two from Lake Land - the men won, 89-87 in overtime – the women won, 62-55
* Southwestern Illinois took two from Rend Lake – the men won, 62-57 – the women won, 69-53
* Kaskaskia swept two from John A Logan – the men won, 86-82 – the women won in overtime, 72-67

(OLNEY)  in girls 7th grade basketball Saturday – Olney won its first two games in the Jr NEC Tournament – the Lady Cubs beat Salem, 37-33 in the first round, then upset top-seeded Flora, 28-26 in a semi-final – in the other bracket, Mt Carmel beat Fairfield, 38-31 and Carmi beat Mt Carmel, 43-13 – the final games are next Saturday in Mt Carmel  :  Salem plays Fairfield at 10:30 for the Consolation Championship  :  Flora plays Mt Carmel at 11:45 for third place  :  then Olney plays Carmi in the Championship Game at 1:00

(OLNEY)  in boys high school basketball last night – Olney split a pair of games with Robinson  :  the Tigers won the varsity game, 50-37 led by Brook Pampe’s 18 points, while Joel Eagleson and Michael Fehrenbacher combined for 25 points – Olney improves to 12&2 overall, still undefeated in the Apollo at 5&0  :  Robinson won the jv game, 64-47  :  the Tigers are back in action tonight at Red Hill High School

 

(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball last night – Newton dropped two games to Effingham  :  the visiting Hearts won the varsity game, 52-45 despite 18 points from Newton’s Peyton Wyatt & 10 points from Dylan Davidson – the Eagles are now 13&2 overall, 3&2 in the Apollo  :  Effingham also won the jv game, 66-50  :  Newton returns to action next Tuesday when they’ll host the Olney Tigers in the NCHS gym

(NOBLE)  in girls high school basketball – the Midland Trail Conference Tournament will finish up tonight down in Cisne  :  Noble / Clay City plays Webber Township for the consolation championship at 4:30 – Woodlawn plays Wayne City for third place at 6:00 – and it’s North Clay / Louisville against Sandoval for the championship at 7:30 – that’s the girls MTC Tournament finals, down at the Cisne High School tonight

 

(OLNEY)  in junior college basketball – the OCC teams begin Great Rivers Athletic Conference play this evening as they travel south to Southeastern Illinois, just south of Eldorado – it’s Lady Knights action at 5:30 and the Blue Knights play at 7:30 – the other GRAC matchups tonight for both men & women have Wabash Valley at Lake Land, Kaskaskia at John A Logan, and Rend Lake at Southwestern Illinois

(OLNEY)  in girls high school basketball last night – Olney swept two from Robinson  :  the Lady Tigers won the varsity game, 45-26 led by Heather Ernst with 16 points, while Marley Miller & Kelsey Shipman combined for 21 points – Olney improves to 13&7 overall, now 7&1 in the Apollo  :  Olney also won the jv game, 41-34  :  the Lady Tigers return to conference action next Monday night, traveling to Newton

 

(NEWTON)  in girls high school basketball last night – Newton dropped two games to Effingham  :  the Lady Eagles lost the varsity game, 59-47 despite 17 points from Morgan Swingler and 12 points from Amy Koebele – Newton drops to 10&7 on the year, now 3&5 in the Apollo Conference  :  Effingham also won the jv game, 49-31  :  the Lady Eagles are back in action Monday night when they host Olney at NCHS

*  Olney won the junior varsity match, 30-12  :  the jv Tigers won six of the eight wrestling matches

(OLNEY)  in boys junior high basketball last night – it was semi-final action at the Junior Midland Trail Conference Tournament in Kinmundy  :  top-seeded Olney St Joe beat Cisne, 35-20  :  and North Clay beat South Central, 42-34  :  this sets up the final three games tonight at the South Central Junior High School  :  Clay City plays Noble for fifth place at 5:30  :  Cisne plays South Central for third place at 6:45  :  and the 14&0, undefeated St Joe Wildcats play North Clay in the championship game at around 8:00

 

(OLNEY)  also in boys junior high basketball last night – Olney split two with Lawrenceville  :  the Cubs lost the 8th grade game, 56-18 as the varsity falls to 4&8 on the year  :  Olney won the 7th grade game, 51-30 as the jv squad is now 5&6  :  the Cubs host Newton Jasper County at 10:00 tomorrow morning at OCC

 

(OLNEY)  in girls junior high hoops last night – Olney split two with Mt Vernon  :  the Lady Cubs won the 8th grade game, 56-28 as the varsity improves to 14&4 on the year  :  Mt Vernon won the close 7th grade game, 25-24  :  while the varsity plays again next Monday, the 7th Grade NEC Tournament is tomorrow

 

(NEWTON)  in junior high volleyball action this week – Newton Jasper County dropped a pair of season opening matches to Charleston, losing the 8th grade match in three games and losing the 7th grade match in two games – both squads are 0&1 and they return to action a week from today at Stewardson-Strasburg


 
(OLNEY)  it was a night full of upsets in the Richland County Men's 4-on-4 Basketball League last night  :  The Heels upset Berryville Vineyards, 81-73  :  The Redbirds upset Repeat Or Bust, 90-82  :  and Friday Nite Lites beat The Salukis, 73-60  :  the current standings show a three way tie for first place – all with records of 9&2 are Repeat Or Bust, Berryville Vineyards, & Friday Nite Lites  :  it’s back to another night of three games next Monday evening at the Claremont Recreation Center starting at 6:30 – free admission

 

(NEWTON)  it’s back to a full schedule for Apollo Conference boys basketball tonight – while the Newton Eagles are at home to host Effingham, the Olney Tigers are at home to host Robinson – elsewhere, it’s Paris at Salem and Charleston at Mt Zion – all the action begins with the junior varsity games at 6:15

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball last night – Illinois held on to beat Northwestern, 57-56 – while the Illini improve to 13&3 overall, the Wildcats fall back to 11&4 on the year – in the Big Ten, Illinois is now 2&2, Northwestern drops to 1&2 – the Illini will host Nebraska in Big Ten action this Saturday afternoon


 
(OLNEY)  in womens junior college basketball last night – Olney Central College beat Illinois Central College, 74-63 – the Lady Knights were led by Tara Wornica with 19 points – Alyssa Like scored 18 points & pulled down 11 rebounds – the Olney Central College Ladies improve to 8&3 on the year – the Lady Knights will open their 2012 GRAC schedule this Saturday night at Southeastern Illinois

 
(NOBLE)  in girls high school basketball last night at the Midland Trail Conference Tournament  :  Woodlawn beat Cisne in the final first round game, 40-19  :  top-seeded North Clay beat Wayne City in a semi-final game, 50-40  :  and Webber Township eliminated South Central in the nightcap, 40-28  :  there are two games on tap tonight with an elimination round game at 6:00 between Noble / Clay City and Cisne – then a 7:30 semi-final game with Sandoval against Woodlawn  :  the tournament’s final three games will be Saturday evening at 4:30, 6:00, and 7:30, all down at the North Wayne High School in Cisne

 

(OLNEY)  in girls junior high basketball – Olney swept two games from Jasper of Wayne County  :  the Lady Cubs won the 8th grade game, 43-12 led by Taylor Rauch & Blake Nohren – the varsity’s now 13&4 on the year  :  Olney won the 7th grade game, 25-7  :  the Lady Cubs will host Mt Vernon tonight at ERMS

 

(NEWTON)  in boys junior high basketball from Tuesday night – Newton Jasper County split two with Dieterich  :  the Junior Eagles won the 7th grade game, 42-24  :  Dieterich won the 8th grade game, 54-20  :  the Newton Jasper County boys are back in action tonight at Cumberland


 
(OLNEY)  in boys high school wrestling from last Saturday’s Argenta-Oreana Bomber Classic :
* the Olney Tigers finished 13th out of the 17 teams – Mt Vernon Rams was a 29.5 point winner over 2nd place Quincy Notre Dame – the host Bombers were 3rd – Illini Bluffs was a half point back in 4th place
*  out of the 14 classes, Olney had five two match winners and five one match winners 
*  Colton Carmody finished 4th in the 120 pound class with a 2&2 record on the day
*  Dallas Peck finished 6th in the 126 pound class with 2 wins and 2 losses on the day
*  Aaron Foerster finished 6th in the 220 pound class with a 2&3 record on the day
*  Chris Ford finished 6th in the 285 pound class with a record of 1&2 on the day
*  Jesse Jared finished 7th in the 138 pound class with a 2&2 mark on the day
*  Jacob Cecil finished 7th in the 106 pound class with a record of 1&2 on the day
*  Jake Schmitt finished 8th in the 145 pound class with a 2&2 record on the day
*  Derek Novak finished 8th in the 113 pound class with a mark of 1&2 on the day
*  Mitchell Harmon & Tim Sturm each won a match in their respective classes

(OLNEY)  the 2012 Cardinals Caravan schedule has been announced with several midwestern stops planned for next month in January  :  Caravan 1 will include four stops in Missouri  :  Caravan 2 will include three stops in Illinois – during the day Friday, January 13th, in Champaign, and later that Friday night, in Decatur – then during the following Saturday night, January 14th, in Quincy  :  Caravan 3 will include four stops in Missouri  :  Caravan 4 includes stops in Missouri, Arizona, & Tennessee  :  & Caravan 5 will include three stops in Illinois – during the day Sunday, January 15th, in Mattoon, and later that Sunday night in Peoria – then during the next night, Monday, January 16th, in Springfield  :  we’ll have more information available in the days ahead or check the Cardinals website at www.cardinals.com
