Saturday & Sunday  :  the Cubs split two  :  the White Sox lost two  :  the Reds split two
Monday  :  the Cardinals begin a series at home against the Reds – first of three is tonight
Monday  :  the Cubs host San Diego tonight  :  the White Sox are idle until tomorrow night

 

(OLNEY)  in high school softball Saturday – Carbondale won the Robinson Softball Tournament  :
*  Carbondale beat Robinson in the title game, 5-3 after pool play wins over Olney, Neoga, & Red Hill
*  Red Hill won the third place game over Neoga, 12-3
*  Effingham won the fifth place game by beating Hutsonville-Palestine, 12-1
*  the Olney Lady Tigers three close games, each game by two runs or less
    *  Olney lost to Carbondale, 6-7  :  lost to Red Hill, 2-4  :  and lost to Effingham, 4-6
*  during the day, Rachel Wisner and Peyton Stuck each had four hits, while Wisner had five RBI
*  now at 16&9 on the year, Olney and it’s 6&3 LIC record go west to play at Flora this afternoon

(OLNEY)  the Red Hill High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes will host a fundraising 4-on-4 Basketball Tournament in the Red Hill Junior / Senior High School Gyms on Saturday morning, May 4th, starting at 8:00 – along with games, there will be plenty of fun, food, t-shirts, and raffle prizes – all proceeds will go toward Brain Tumor Research in memory of Melissa Fiscus who passed away in 2009 from a brain tumor – free will donations accepted at the door – all are invited – call Red Hill High School for details

 

(OLNEY)  the Olney Central College Foundation will host its 12th annual “Golf Outing” this Friday, May 3rd, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – lunch will be served at 11:30 with tee-off at 1:00 – the event includes 18 holes of golf in a scramble format with an entry fee of $60 per person – call OCC today

 

(NEWTON)  time is running out to sign-up for the Newton Women’s Tennis League for summer 2013 – the fee is at $10 for the cost of balls and court-related expenses, and it’s open to all women age 18 or older – the season play begins May 29th and continues for 12 weeks with schedules to be emailed or mailed – the registration deadline is tomorrow, April 30th – for more details, call Emily Carroll at 618-783-3502

(OLNEY) in junior college softball – the Region 24 postseason tournament began yesterday :
*  the OCC Lady Knights swept two from Kaskaskia, winning 8-7 and 9-5
*  by winning the best-of-three first round series, the Lady Knights advance to the Region 24 Final Four, which will be played next week at Kaskaskia College, just west of Centralia
* the OCC Lady Knights are now 31&21 on the year, finishing 4th in the GRAC with a record of 17&15

 

(OLNEY) in junior college baseball yesterday – the Blue Knights won the first of three against Lake Land :
*  the Blue Knights beat the visiting Lakers on Dennis Conley Field, 7-2
*  the series will move to Laker Field, just south of Mattoon, with doubleheader action today at 12 noon
*  the Blue Knights will finish up their Region 24 schedule next week against Shawnee
*  all to be followed by the Region 24 Tournament with the top six teams to play at Kaskaskia College

 

(OLNEY)  in high school baseball yesterday – the Tigers won a non-conference game on the road  :
*  Olney defeated Newton, 9-2 as the Tigers outhit the host Eagles, 13 to 5
*  the Tigers improve to 14&3 on the year, remaining at 8&1 in the Little Illini Conference
*  in LIC action Monday – it’s Olney at Flora, while Newton will host Robinson

(OLNEY) in junior college softball – the Region 24 postseason tournament began yesterday :
*  Southeastern Illinois won the best two out of three play-in series over Lincoln Trail
*  Southwestern Illinois won the best two out of three play-in series over Shawnee
*  the best two out of three first round series are scheduled to begin today with twinbills at 2:00 :
    * 4th-seeded Olney Central will host 5th-seeded Kaskaskia
    * 3rd-seeded John A. Logan will host 6th-seeded Rend Lake
    * 2nd-seeded Wabash Valley will host 7th-seeded Southwestern Illinois
    * top-seeded Lake Land will host 9th-seeded Southeastern Illinois
* the top four teams move into the Region 24 Final Four series at Kaskaskia next weekend
* the OCC Lady Knights finished the regular season at 29&21 with a GRAC record of 17&15 in 4th place

*  John A. Logan begins the series with a single nine inning game today at 3:00 at Lincoln Trail College

*  the Tigers beat the host Wildcats, 6 to 3 as Olney won all three of the singles matches
   *  Levi Weiler won the number one singles match in two sets
   *  Andrew Garrett won the number two singles match in two sets
   *  Austin Urfer won the number three singles match in one set
*  the Tigers won three of the four doubles matches :
    * Nick Kuhl and Derek Walker won the number one doubles match
    * Cameron Pearcy and Austin Urfer won the number two doubles match
    * Sterling Hostetter and Andrew Steber won the number three doubles match
*  now at 6&3 overall, the Tigers remain undefeated in the Little Illini Conference at 2&0
*  Olney will compete at the Champaign Centennial Doubles Tournament tomorrow

*  Olney’s only hits were singles from Justin Bailey and Ryan Eagleson
*  the Tigers fall back to 13&3 on the year, and now at 8&1 in the Little Illini Conference
*  the Tigers are in non-conference action at Newton this afternoon against the Eagles

(OLNEY)  in high school softball yesterday – Olney won a conference game at home  :
*  the Lady Tigers defeated Marshall, 5-3 although Olney was outhit, 8 to 6
*  Elizabeth Walker was the winning pitcher working all seven innings with twelve strikeouts
*  Olney’s top hitter was Mackenzie Sechrest with two hits, two runs scored, and one RBI
*  Kenzie Zwilling and Taylor Barrick also had one RBI apiece, plus excellent hustle by Rachel Wisner
*  Olney improves to 16&5 overall, now 6&3 in the LIC – they’ll host Teutopolis this afternoon

 

(NEWTON)  in high school softball yesterday – Newton won a conference game on the road  :
*  the Lady Eagles slipped by Red Hill in eight innings, 5-4
*  Newton’s Karsyn McCoy and Keidrah Hardiek combined for the win
*  Newton’s top hitters were Gabby Zerrusen, Megan Jansen, and Karsyn McCoy
*  now at 6&1 in the LIC, now 10&7 overall, the Lady Eagles will play Robinson on Monday

 

(NOBLE) in high school softball yesterday – Noble / Clay City won a huge MTC game at home :
*  the Lady Wildcats beat Woodlawn, 10-3 as Noble / Clay City outhit the Cardinals, 16 to 8
*  Darcie Hawkins was the winning pitcher with the complete game, 7 inning win
*  top NCC hitters included Hannah Dulaney with three hits and three RBI - Darcie Hawkins had three hits
*  Whittney Reynolds had two hits and two runs scored – Sarah Weiler had two hits and three RBI
*  the Lady Tigers return to action next Tuesday when they’ll host Dieterich at WRHS in Noble

Crates  :  Aaron Heck won the feature race, followed by Brent Lewis and Matt Filkins

Hornets  :  Mike Mandrell took the checkered flag, followed by David Bolyard and Jeremy Callahan

*  Salem won the nine team event with a 14 point edge over second place Olney, 94 to 80
*  Mt. Vernon was third, one point better than fourth place Jasper County
*  Carmi was fifth, followed by Flora, Mt. Carmel, Noble, and Red Hill
*  the second place Lady Cubs won one of the fourteen events, with four 2nd’s and four 3rd’s
    *  Olney’s lone victory came from Lauren Eagleson in the 800 meter run
    *  Jynsen Yonaka was second in the long jump and 200 meter dash
    *  Bailey Washburn was second in the 100 meter dash
    *  Bailey Patterson, Bailey Washburn, Lauren Eagleson, Stephanie Shan were 2nd in the 400 meter relay

*  the Tigers beat Robinson, 14-2 as Olney outhit the Maroons, 10 to 8
*  now at 2&1, Olney’s Justin Bailey was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run in four innings
*  Olney’s top hitters were Tryston Runyon and Justin Bailey with two hits each
*  the Tigers improve to 13&2 on the year, still undefeated at 8&0 in the Little Illini Conference
*  with today’s game with Mattoon cancelled, the Tigers will host Marshall in LIC play tomorrow

*  the Lady Tigers beat Robinson, 4-2 although the visiting Lady Maroons outhit Olney, 7 to 6

(ROBINSON)  in boys high school track – the Robinson Invitational was held this past Monday afternoon  :
*  the host Maroons won the twelve team event with a 145 to 131 edge over the Olney Tigers
*  the Newton Eagles were 8 points back in third place, followed by Teutopolis & Vandalia in the top five
*  then it was St. Anthony, Palestine-Hutsonville, Altamont, Red Hill, St. Elmo, Cowden-Herrick, & Paris
*  the second place Olney Tigers won six of the twenty events, along with two second’s and six third’s
    *  Gus Lathrop won both the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash
    *  Blaine Storer won the high jump
    *  Jordan Hahn won the long jump
