ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (01/17/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) Despite an objection motion from the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules being approved, permanent rules for Illinois’ gun ban and registry filed by the State Police are now officially in place. Meeting in Springfield yesterday to start the spring 2024 legislative session, the JCAR committee reviewed all the rules on the registry on banned guns and ammunition magazines. The next meeting for JCAR is February 6th in Springfield.

(SPRINGFIELD) The cold snap in Illinois and the Midwest is causing problems for those who drive electric vehicles. Long lines could be seen at EV charging stations around the state since the temperatures tumbled over the weekend. In fact, several vehicles had to be towed from charging lines on Monday. Tests found that electric vehicles lose between 20% and 30% of their range when temperatures dip below freezing.

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Supreme Court has announced the creation of the Pretrial Release Appeals Task Force, a result from the implementation of the Pretrial Fairness Act in September 2023. It’s all due to the dramatic increase in the number of appeals from pretrial release decisions by the circuit courts. The Task Force will convene to review the appeals and their impact on the caseloads in each of the five appellate court districts.
