ILLINOIS JULY PRECIPITATION REPORT

(CHAMPAIGN) After a drier than normal June, the following thirty-one (31) days in July were just the opposite. Last month’s statewide precipitation in Illinois averaged 7.01 inches, which was nearly 3 inches (2.95) above the 1991-2020 average and the third wettest July on record, that’s according to the Illinois State Water Survey at the University of Illinois in Champaign. The state’s wettest area in July was here in the southeastern and south-central regions, where up to 12 inches of rain fell, anywhere from 1 to 7 inches above normal. Here at the WVLN-WSEI official National Weather Service Weather Station, at the south edge of Olney, we recorded 8.90 inches of rain in July. Meanwhile, the 31 days had a mixed bag of temperatures, with more days last month cooler than normal, but also several days with intense heat. The statewide average in July was 73.8 degrees, nearly 2 degrees (1.6) below the 1991-2020 average, tying for the 29th warmest July on record going back to 1895. The average temperature at the WVLN-WSEI studios at the south edge of Olney was 75 degrees.
