ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (01/28/2025)

(SPRINGFIELD) As reported on national news, hundreds of officers with U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), along with other agencies, have arrested nearly 1,000 people set to be deported, all in less than one week’s time. Of the list arrested and now in custody, there were several from downstate Illinois and Indiana. Among those assisting ICE were the FBI, the U.S. Marshall’s Service, the Bureau of ATFE, the U.S. Border Patrol, and others.

(ST. LOUIS) The recent run of bitterly cold temperatures has not slowed the overwintering activities of American bald eagles in Illinois, not to mention the millions of wildlife watchers who flock to the state each year to catch a glimpse of the majestic creatures. With a growing population of about 3,100 bald eagles that spend the winter in some 27 counties, mostly along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers, the numbers do not include the now many bald eagles that reside throughout the year in several downstate counties, including those in southeastern and south central Illinois. In fact, the largest concentration of bald eagles in the continental U.S. is in Illinois. This past Saturday was noted as Illinois Eagle Day.

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Treasurer’s office is urging people to check the I-CASH missing money website to see if they have money or other unclaimed property waiting for them to claim. The State Treasurer is legally required to return unclaimed property to its owners or their heirs, no matter how long it takes. The agency has returned more than $2.2 billion in unclaimed property since 2015. For more details, check the illinoistreasurer.gov website.
