ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (04/11/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) The Office of Executive Inspector General is reporting progress of investigating whether state of Illinois employees improperly obtained federal Paycheck Protection Program loans. The OEIG has concluded that of the 325 PPP cases, 275 of them showed findings of wrongdoing. The Inspector General is again recommending discharge of the employees who have been found to have engaged in this misconduct.

(SPRINGFIELD) Legislation is advancing in Springfield that would stop property tax interest and penalties from being charged to deceased individuals. The measure would allow the estate to apply for a waiver with the county treasurer within the county where the individual lived. The waiver would prevent interest and penalties from being charged on delinquent property taxes for the deceased individual and their families. The bill passed in the State Senate and now awaits action in the State House in the days or weeks ahead.

(SPRINGFIELD) Legislation has been introduced in Springfield that would require insurance companies to cover preventive cancer screenings and genetic testing for individuals with a family history of cancer. The proposal would expand coverage to include prevention and screenings for all types of cancer for people who have a family member affected by the disease. Similar bills are being considered in both the House and Senate.

(BELLEVILLE) The U.S. Air Force at the Scott Air Force Base near Belleville conducted an explosive disposal response after a K-9 alerted personnel during a routine explosive sweep yesterday. Officials blocked access for entry to the base and told nearby residents to shelter in place. The search of the specific area of the base and elsewhere found nothing.
