ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (08/26/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Supreme Court has issued a decision leaving in place a lower court ruling that blocked a change in the state’s election law that would have kept 14 candidates off the ballot in the 2024 general election on November 5th. It was back in May that Governor J.B. Pritzker signed new “anti-slating” legislation into law, changing the rules for ballot access in the middle of an election cycle. The Liberty Justice Center filed a lawsuit against the State Board of Elections, arguing that the it’s mid-cycle rule change violated the candidates’ constitutional right to access the ballot and the Stae’s High Court agreed.

(SPRINGFIELD) A 16-state coalition, led by Texas, but not including Illinois, has sued the Biden Administration to stop a widespread amnesty plan from going into effect. This comes two months after the President announced the plan designed to fast track a path to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals who have been living in the U.S. illegally for more than 10 years and those who are married to a U.S. citizen. A part of the plan was implemented by the Department of Homeland Security last week & the coalition says the President’s move is “an end-around-the-law” which ignores the Constitution while violating the country’s Administrative Procedure Act and disobeying federal law. The only Midwestern states joining the lawsuit are Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Ohio.
