WEATHER OUTLOOK – MONDAY JULY 6, 2026

OLNEY/NEWTON/ALBION, Ill.

Residents across south central Illinois can expect a break from the typical July heat to start the week, with pleasant temperatures and mostly dry conditions lasting through Wednesday.

Afternoon highs are expected to reach the low to mid-80s, providing comfortable conditions for outdoor activities. While a brief, isolated afternoon shower can’t be ruled out, most communities should remain dry through the middle of the week.

That quiet weather pattern is expected to change by Thursday.

A weak cold front will move into central Illinois before slowing down and stalling across the region through Friday. As that front lingers, rain and thunderstorm chances will increase, with some storms capable of producing heavy rainfall, localized flooding, and isolated damaging wind gusts.

Anyone with outdoor plans later this week should stay updated on the latest forecast, as conditions could change quickly depending on the timing and strength of individual storms.

Mid-July Heat Could Be on the Horizon

Looking ahead to next week, forecast confidence becomes less certain.

Meteorologists are monitoring the potential development of a large high-pressure system that could expand eastward into the Midwest. If that pattern develops, central Illinois may experience its first prolonged stretch of excessive summer heat by the middle of July, bringing significantly warmer temperatures and increasing humidity.

If the high-pressure system remains farther west, however, periodic chances for showers and thunderstorms would continue, helping keep temperatures closer to seasonal averages.

Residents are encouraged to check for forecast updates throughout the week as the late-week storm system and next week’s temperature outlook become clearer.
